Indigenous Peoples' Perspectives on Multicultural Education

Dr. Cornel Pewewardy and Dr. Jeanette Haynes Writer (Guest Editors)

Invitation to Submit/Call for Papers

Deadline: March 30, 2010

Multicultural Perspectives is the peer-reviewed journal of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME).

There has been an overall lack of written representation describing the experiences of Indigenous Peoples in education (broadly) and within the field of multicultural education (specifically). This special issue of Multicultural Perspectives is intended to provide valuable information for practitioners (teachers, counselors, teacher educators, etc.) which might inform and impact pedagogical practices and curricular perspectives with links to Indigenous cultural practices within a multicultural education framework. The guest editors of this special issue are interested in any and all contributions which link the Indigenous experience to multicultural education. For example, a submission may provide a general analysis/perspective on multicultural education as an academic discipline seen within an Indigenous student point of view (the promise of multicultural education for Indigenous Peoples, the problems of multicultural education for Indigenous Peoples, new directions and possibilities for multicultural education based on the Indigenous experience, etc.). Other possibilities may include:

  • Culturally Responsive Curriculum and Pedagogy for Indigenous Peoples
  • Schooling (policies and procedures) for Indigenous Peoples
  • Non-formal Schooling and Indigenous Peoples
  • Outside of Schooling Contexts for Indigenous Peoples
  • Tribal Language Learning and Multicultural Education
  • Multicultural Education and teacher preparation for working with Indigenous Peoples
  • Multicultural Education and Native Studies/pedagogies
  • Indigenous Newcomers and Multicultural Education
  • Indigenous families/communities and Multicultural Education
  • Indigenous diaspora and multicultural education
  • Indigenous Nationalism (counter to Pan-Indianism) in multicultural education

Submit manuscripts of conceptual/empirical works by March 30, 2010 for peer-review. Full submission guidelines can be found here. Send manuscripts to: Francisco Rios, Ph.D., Senior Associate Editor, Multicultural Perspectives, 307-766-4055 or frios@uwyo.edu. For further information, please contact Francisco Rios or Cornel Pewewardy, 503-725-9689 or cornelp@pdx.edu.

The 2010 Diversity in Place Films Project will focus on the DIVERSITY OF PLACES that compounds our urban realities. Questions, themes, topics and issues to be addressed in the digital film can include, but are not limited to:

  • What makes a place a place? Where to locate place-ness?

  • Versions of place: What makes a place sacred or secular, precious or worthless, safe or insecure, open or closed, inclusive or exclusive…? How are these emotions transmitted and experienced? How are the rules of appropriate behavior in these places enforced or transgressed?

  • Who makes places and for whom? Who has the right to (re-)make and use such places and why?

It is free to enter a film. Ten films will be selected to be screened and judged at the March 15h Diversity of Places event in Honolulu, Hawaii.
